Anthony Vaccarello presented his debut collection of garbage bags, I mean YSL's latest trends, this week at Paris Fashion Week and let’s just say... it got off to a very rough start. Where YSL used to be fashion forward and demure, Anthony now took us to the streets...down the corner alleyway and to the garbage dumps.
Can I just start off by saying, who in their right mind saw this collection and said, "Wow, this is runway ready! It is so on trend and everyone will look great in it!" If I saw this collection, I would fire Anthony immediately and sue him for defamation of brand character. Quite honestly if something can’t even look good on the models, how the hell do you expect normal sized people to try to look good in it?
Let’s start with “trash bag” look #1 and #2:

I can’t imagine that the fashionistas watching this show thought, “That dress will look icona-chic on me and I need it!” Yes, I understand we’re taking inspiration from the 90’s now because that was the “cool thing” but like many trends, they should be left in the past. This took 90’s inspiration in the completely wrong direction and took puff sleeves, which were never cute, and made them look extremely sloppy. Whoever cut this dress also seems to have cut the fabric a little too short on most of his dresses because you can pretty much see her area. I think maybe if you cut those ugly ill fitted sleeves off, we might be getting somewhere. Rule I was always taught, “When you leave the house, take one accessory off”, well take those damn sleeves off please.
“Someone forgot to finish this” look #2:

This is what would be made on project runway during the unconventional challenge if they said make an outfit out of the insides of a car and you only have ten minutes. To me, fashion should look finished and sewn to perfection while this item looks like it started to fall apart and off the model as she walked down the runway. Again the length is giving me major hooker realness and it is by no means a classy lady length. I suggest just staring at the shoes during most of this collection because that is it’s only saving grace. Nina Garcia’s exact words for this outfit would be:
“1999 Lil Kim Called and wants her Dress Back” Look #3:

Okay the saddest part about this dress is that it is actually very well constructed compared to rest of the collection. This hit just short of being amazing until he snuck in that sparkly pasty over the left boob. This might have been a moment in red carpet history for Lil Kim but do you really want your collection to be compared to such trash as Lil Kim? I feel like he missed the mark, just short of a nipple.
Okay fine, I did find some positive highlights from the show that I saw between the piles of black leather garbage. The YSL logo stilettos were quite iconic and were such a chic move by Anthony, if only he took the inspiration from those and applied it to every look. He snuck in one men’s piece which got me very excited/terrified to see where he will take his menswear in the coming season. Are we going to have another Rick Owens moment? Also, some of his silk fabrics draped on the models with such beauty, eloquence, and moved with such fluidity that it slinked down their bodies in a breathtaking way. Sadly the positives in this collection are drowned out by the many looks that are just plain awful. I will say he was definitely consistent with this collection but consistently bad. I think it belongs in its home, a big dumpster behind the YSL corporate office. #SorryImNotSorry
